Your medical information file
If you have ever applied for individually underwritten (not from your employer) life, health, disability or long-term care insurance during the preceding seven year period, you may want to check your medical information file to ensure its accuracy. Most insurance companies consult these files which are stored in the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) data bank. Your medical information (and some non-medical information) is collected from and shared among insurers whenever you apply for individual life, health, disability or long-term care insurance. The insurance companies use these files to help them determine whether or not you pose a significant underwriting risk.
You can learn more by visiting the MIB website, and you can request a free copy of your specific medical information file by contacting the MIB.
